In the Bleak Mid Winter

Russia

We travelled by train in winter through Poland into Russia and through Siberia. It’s just after New Year and people are getting back to work, walking as fast as possible to get from A to B. Days are short and temperatures are as cold as -30 degrees. In amongst the grey cityscapes we catch glimpses of colour; a red hat, a discarded orange picnic chair or a collection of balloons for sale. Outside of the cities the monotony of snowy forests are broken up by oil plants and big industrial cities. Sometimes we see beauty in the bleakest of landscapes.
